Southwest launches new Digital Twin platform for distance learning
By Diana Fedinec
In Spring of 2021, the IT Department piloted a new distance learning technology platform called Digital Twin to provide students an innovative and customized alternative to learning. The new platform offers students the convenience of choosing a course that is simultaneously offered both in-person and remotely, provided they have a computer with access to the internet.
Digital Twin project lead and Deputy Chief Information Officer David Rosenthal says the platform incorporates various technologies to create a seamless experience. “We worked very hard with our vendor partners to design Digital Twin to facilitate and replicate the real-time “in-class” experience for students who may be attending at a distance,” said Rosenthal. “We’re very proud to know the platform configuration here at Southwest is entirely unique to Tennessee and to the Mid- South. We see this project ultimately increasing our enrollment and adding value to the instruction provided to our students.”
How does Digital Twin work?
Once a student registers for a Digital Twin course, the student can opt to attend in person or virtually and at any time during the semester. This means a student can attend in person one day and opt to attend virtually the next time the course meets. Students who attend virtually are able to interact with their instructor and classmates in real time.
Digital Twin offerings include Principles of Accounting, Fundamentals of Communication, Law Practice Management, Social Problems and more.
