Farewell: Retiree Vera Jane Williams
Southwest mourns the loss of retiree Vera Jane Williams who passed away Nov. 25, 2018, due to an extended illness. Known as “Miss Vera” to those who worked with her, Williams was a Southwest employee for over 15 years. She worked as a preschool teacher at the Child Care Programs until her retirement in September 2017.
Southwest Director of Campus Child Care Programs Dr. Mary Palmer knew Williams for more than 20 years, even before she started her career at Southwest.
“Vera was a certified pre-K teacher for the Shelby County Schools district,” said Palmer. “When she came to Southwest, everyone fell in love with her. She was a kind, smart and caring teacher --- in fact, children who left our program would often return to visit with her.”
Williams also was known as the Girl Friday of the office. She was always prepared for everything and anything, from having a needle and thread handy to sew up the hemline of someone’s skirt, to staying late to help manage the day care center when staff were in school.
“You could always depend on Vera. She worked well with the families, children and staff,” Palmer said. “She touched many lives and we will always carry a memory of her in our hearts.”
